In February, I taught at the Santa Barbara Writers Workshop, a one day FREE workshop held at Santa Barbara City College. Fannie Flagg keynoted. www.veoh.com/videos/v1011016MwHeFjGQ She’s an inspirational writer who speaks the truth about the writing life. Even after phenomenal commercial success, it doesn't get easier. You still have to put 'your butt' in the chair, says Ms. Flagg. The stories she shares about circling around it endear her to audiences. Her newest book, a work in progress, is about a woman who considers taking herself out of the game of life. Fannie read the opening-poignant and funny-she is a gifted storyteller.
Also in February, I taught at the Southern California Writers Conference held in San Diego. Marketing the Muse is also invited back to SCWC for the Irvine based conference in September, 2008. For several years, I've been nudging Michael Steven Gregory, the executive director of SCWC, to host a conference in Orange County. We have lots of writers here that are under represented which i've always found odd considering U.C.Irvine.'s MFA writing program is world known. Last fall, SCWC was held in Irvine for the first time and guess what? When you hold a conference, the writers come. M.S.G was delighted with the turnout. Yes, Veronica, there are people in the OC that read and write. Some even do it while shopping...
Check SCWC's website for details, www.writersconference.com.
In June, I'm back to my writing roots at the Santa Barbara Writers Conference. Since first attending this conference in 1989, I set my sights on teaching there someday when I was good enough. In 2003, SBWC founders Mary & Barnaby Conrad made that happen when they hired me to teach a marketing workshop. Marketing the Muse Workshops will be offered daily throughout the almost week long conference held at the Doubletree in Santa Barbara, www.sbwritersconference.com
